Offer on established domains for better search engine optimisation

Experts who have studied the factors contributing to good website SEO believe that a domain’s age is one of the factors that helps improve a domain’s authority, thereby enabling better SEO at a lower cost. Indeed, some companies have specialised in reselling ‘used’ domains. Domain Rating (DR), a score calculated by the Ahrefs tool based on the links pointing to a domain, often goes hand in hand with a good ranking, although it is not a Google ranking factor. A domain’s age also plays a part and can boost your ranking, and therefore the visibility of your website.

What has changed since then: Google’s policy on expired domains

This post dates from 2019. Since 5 March 2024, Google has explicitly penalised the misuse of expired domains: buying a domain to capitalise on the reputation of its previous site by publishing low-value content on it. Google enforces this rule through its anti-spam updates, the first of which was completed on 20 March 2024; a site in breach may be demoted or even removed from the results.

Reusing an old domain for a new, useful and relevant website is not targeted by this rule. However, the rule confirms what we had already observed: a domain’s age is no substitute for good content; it is the content that determines rankings.
